I'm a musician, a music educator, and music researcher. I enjoy teaching and sharing my passion for music with students of all ages. I received my Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Furman University in Greenville, SC and received my Master of Music in Music Education from Boston University in Boston, MA. For young children, i would start by showing them Twinkle Twinkle, once the student is able to hold the violin and bow upright without my help, and they understand the basics of violin. For children and adults, i would start with the book A Tune A Day, cause it teaches the basics of playing the violin such as simple scales and arpeggios, and will allow the student to make progress with each song they learn. I emphasize the fundamentals of comfortable, natural playing posture so that each student can produce a beautiful tone with confidence and ease. I use our lessons as a safe space to learn the art of practicing, allowing students to progress individually between lessons. I like to have a consistent plan for all of my lessons, so that students know what to expect, as well as the best methods for practicing. I always start my students off with a warm-up consisting of scales or a technical exercise that relates to the piece that we are working on. When i teach a student who is just starting on a string instrument and has never played before i usually start them with the Suzuki books and cds. I find having a cd or recording to listen to and play along with is a great help. Other books i use with beginners in addition to the Suzuki books that have recordings too are Solos For Young Violinists, solos for young violists, and Fiddle Sessions by Charlie Hall, and Bela Bartok's 44 violin duets. I began teaching privately three years ago after earning both of my BM degrees from the University of Connecticut. Many students I have taught have numerous activities such as ensembles, sports teams, church, and other commitments. This is why I encourage students to practice daily with efficient techniques so they are able to continue to improve during their busy schedules.
