Some highlights of my teaching career include working with A Gift for Music to give Title 1 schools access to the fine arts, being a cabin counselor and cello instructor for young musicians at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, and providing private lessons at The Orlando School of Music. All these experiences created a burning desire for higher fine arts education, culminating in my part in the co-creation of the Central Florida Cello Association, an organization which provides the UCF cello studio with multiple masterclasses a year given by world class artists and acclaimed educators. My love of music grew as a child having a family supportive of music education. I see the participation in playing musical instruments as much of a fun activity as it is a physical and mental workout. After receiving my Associate in Science in Music I went straight into a studio and started teaching a range of students from 4 - 24 years old, and from the never-picked-up-an-instrument-before to I-can't-wait-for-the-competition levels. I want to see students have "Aha!" moments. When students feel happy and successful, I in turn feel the same way. My teaching philosophy is that learning is both fun and challenging. I want my students to enjoy learning. Students often comment that I'm funny, respectful, and patient. They think this is important because laughter relaxes instruction a bit, respect should go both ways between instructors/students, and a patient teacher reduces student frustration when they mess up. My teaching style is flexible and fun! I love seeing students learn and develop a passion for music. While it is important to correct errors in order to be able to learn, i think it is equally if not more important to focus on a students accomplishments. Setting realistic goals is also important when working with students. My students need to feel good about their playing and what they have accomplished in order to continue to be willing to work towards their goals. Read More
