I have been teaching consistently since the summer of 2013, working with students of all ages and ability. Although I specialize in violin performance and pedagogy, I have also spent a significant amount of time teaching piano, music theory, and harmony. I believe that consistent practice, alongside warm encouragement and motivation is the key to any kind of success when teaching music. Over the years, I have learned that teaching violin and music does not have to be done solely on the instrument, and I like to spend time developing a strong sense of harmony and rhythm by playing small practice games throughout a lesson- especially with children. Adult students can opt to go to the next book in the series (Book II and III of the 'modern' piano course). For String students I am comfortable in the 'Essential Elements' series, 'String Builder' series and 'All for Strings' methods as an excellent base with which to start. For Guitar Students I am a fan of 'Alfred's Basic Guitar Method' Books 1-3. For Bass guitar students I prefer 'Mel Bay's Bass Guitar Method. Read More

My teaching style is all about getting the student to love music! There is nothing else that will be a greater and more honest motivator than loving what they are doing. Singing, games and dancing are great when the little ones get distracted or discouraged. I make sure to let everyone know that music isn't easy; it's hard and takes a lot of hard work and practice. But it is worth every minute of being able to play anything you desire. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I have been teaching regularly since my college days. I started as a piano teacher, but quickly expanded into stringed instrument. Right now I teach at home, in my own studio, my student's homes, and in couple local schools as a music director and teacher. I prepare y students not only how to play, but also how to become self starting artists able to read and play. I organize yearly recitals where all of my students can show their skills. Read More

I'm a career string quartet musician who loves both performing and teaching. I graduated with a Master of Music degree from McGill University in Viola Performance. I've been lucky to have many amazing opportunities so far: I've performed in Carnegie Hall as a member of the New York String Orchestra Seminar; in Yokohama and Tokyo, Japan; and in Salzburg, Austria (the birthplace of Mozart!) as a member of the Milton String Quartet. Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
Not at all! I was motivated to learn violin after my older sister started lessons as a child, but beyond that none of my parents, grandparents, or extended family played music. I firmly believe music is not hereditary, but it can help motivate students to learn if someone close to them plays music. Long after my sister stopped playing violin, I continued on to become a professional.
If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I never wanted to learn the viola, but one semester in college, I was assigned to play the viola part in a Piano Quintet. I had to learn Alto Clef, and adjust to the bigger size of the instrument. But I am glad that I did because it helped me be a better violinist, and I loved the deeper, darker register of the viola!
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I have a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Violin Performance. As a young man, I chose this degree because I couldn't imagine myself in any other field. Through studying music, I found myself. I wouldn't be the man I am today otherwise.
What is your dream piece to perform and why?
I first heard Ralph Vaughan Williams "Lark Ascending" on the radio while driving home from High School. I had to pull over to wipe the tears from my eyes. Ever since, the piece has represented everything I love about music. I would feel honored to perform it and share its tenderness with an audience.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
This can vary for each child, but here are some signs to look for:
1) If they ask to start lessons, they are ready.
2) If they can read and write, they are ready.
3) If they enjoy singing and dancing, they are ready.
Any child can learn a musical instrument!
What does a normal practice session look like for you?
I always start with my warm-up scale routine. I may vary it slightly, but I find starting with scales and exercises helps my body open up to playing and puts me in a good headspace. The consistency and familiarity are comforting for me and help me feel confident to practice harder things afterward. Then I move to my pieces: I like to start with something easier, but if I have less time I try to prioritize whatever is most important or will take the most time to learn.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Form a regular practice routine. This can mean many different things: some musicians find it helpful to practice at the same time of day, or practice things in the same order. It is important to always tune your instrument beforehand. And most of all, make sure you enjoy what you do! Even if it is challenging and often tedious, there is a joy in learning the craft of music. Find it in the repetitions, the metronome, the learning process.
