Ideally, I prefer to work with younger children because it is at this stage in life that they are most musically receptive; I believe it is important for a budding musician to love their craft and - regardless of age, technical skill can only take one so far in the arts. I have seen far too many musicians abandon their gift for the mundane, due to distorted visions of incompetence and unwarranted deceptions of grandeur. Read More

Instruments: Piano Voice Flute Piccolo

For small children, I used kid-friendly method books provided by the music school I was working with at the time to keep them engaged and entertained. For older children and adults, I simply ask about their prior musical knowledge and the music that they enjoy so we could use that as inspiration. For beginning students, I recommend the Standard of Excellence or Essential Elements which are both great options for the basics of their instruments and both include fingering charts and fingerings for each new note they learn. My teaching experience dates back from high school days teaching church, college, university choirs, and eventually soloists or ensemble group. I have had groups who become champions in multiple competitions, I have had students who became queens of jazz vocal competitions, I have students who eventually became professional musicians and vocal artists, and I coach too while they are in a recording studio especially with first timers. Some of my students love to write their own original songs and I help them be able to choose the right vocabulary, rhymes, rhythm, melody and all. Read More

I truly love teaching; there are few pleasures greater than seeing students progress. I encourage them to discover how beautiful and fun music is, and help them to find and develop their own areas of interest and talent. Born in Japan of a mother who started me on classical voice and piano in my early childhood, I went on to play flute and the Japanese koto and shamisen, and to compose and sing my own songs. It is so important for my students to know that I am here to help them and that they have their own individual path. It is not about improving quickly but really understanding and loving what they are doing. I try to find ways to inspire my students so that the whole lesson is productive and fun. I love sharing my love for music and inspiring my students to know the power that music holds. Read More

I've actually written and produced my own music theory book that was in all Borders stores before they closed down. I've learned a few methods and I try to incorporate them all unless the student or parents wants something specific. My method is a method where I can teach 1 thing countless ways. I love my students to learn theory because it is a very important backbone to music. Some people can play instruments without ever really kwoing what they are playing or understand the theory behind it, and I think it holds them back from truely being creative and understanding of music.    With my methods students will be able to play from any genre, any book, and hopefully will be able to create their own music. With all my students, I like to first figure out their goals and tailor our lessons to match each individuals aspirations. For every singer I will assign various vocal exercises to practice each week. We also will work on sight-reading exercises to encourage a high level of musicianship. For beginners, I typically like to start with the 24 Italian Arias and/or light musical theater pieces to establish a good technical foundation and gradually move on to more advanced repertoire. Instruments: Voice

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
My parents had a genius approach to this dilemma. They left some basic instruments accessible in our living room, and let us watch very little television. Sure enough, at one point or another, each of us gravitated toward either the piano, guitar, or drums and eventually wanted lessons. If your child is showing interest in an instrument, it is never too early to get him/her started with taking lessons from a teacher who is open to taking on a young student. I've found that the younger kids are, the less inhibited they are to sing/play.

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Practice is kind of like exercise. In order to get over the hump, you have to work until it feels a little tedious, but you also don't want to completely burn out. Practice is key when learning to play or sing, but it's also important stay joyful. Music is a gift, not a chore. If you find yourself getting annoyed and irritable over a practice session, take a break. Listen to your favorite jam, sing in a funny voice, have a dance party...do something that reminds you why you want to play music. Once you're re-energized, take another stab at it!

Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
My students have been seen on Broadway/tour in shows such as A Bronx Tale, School of Rock, Anastasia, Annie, and The Sound of Music. The kids who tend to "book it" are those who are not only talented, but who aren't afraid to let there natural spunk come through. Most casting directors are looking for kids who simply come off as gifted, real children, not groomed robots. It's important to preserve that joyful innocence while honing a child's craft. Save the pressure for the SATs, not the audition room.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
As a child, I was endlessly inspired by my piano teacher. She was quirky and unconventional, never wanting music to feel like a "chore." When I would get frustrated with myself, she'd throw up her hands and exclaim, "let's take a break and jam!" She would then pull out a chord progression and we'd improvise together until I was ready to go back to my sheet music. She sparked an excitement in me that I try to pass on to my students. While singing has a lot to do with technique, so much of it is more intuitive than we make it. My goal is to teach students tools to help discover and utilize their natural gifts, developing a voice that is uniquely their own.
