Four years ago I had my first experience as a teacher in Cuba. It was with only 3 students in an Elementary school. I have to tell that in the beginning I was so nervous because each student was different, had different goals, styles and ability to learn. As a strong advocate of new music, I have actively participated in numerous student composer concerts that have presented new and viable works from USF's esteemed composition program. I have also participated in the Apple Hill Chamber Music Festival (2012 and 2013) and the annual Tennessee Cello Workshop (2009). I was the principal cellist of the 2009 National Philharmonic Summer String Institute under the direction of maestro Piotr Gajewski and I was recently the Assistant Principal of the University of South Florida Symphony Orchestra. I am a public schools orchestra director who has taught in 2 school distrcits in New Jersey and now will be teaching in the Orange County Public Schools. I am a Venezuelan violinist who grew up in "El Sistema", which has let people learn to love music, and has given the opportunity to less resourceful kids to make music through dedication and team work. In 2002 I joined my city's orchestra, the "Ciudad Guayana" orchestra in Venezuela. I played both first and second violin throughout my 16 years of being there. I try to have a very positive approach to teaching. I believe that if a student is told what they are doing wrong constantly, they will feel like they aren't good enough for the instrument, or they will lose interest. I instead focus on telling them what they are doing right, and offer suggestions on what they need to improve on. Read More
