I focus first on fundamentals of sound and technique to build a foundation for the student then work on scales and repertoire to get them playing music. I teach the basics first. I show my student how to hold the bow and the violin in detail. I explain that it will be awkward to hold the bow in correct position because it is unusual for person to hold the right hand that way.
