I began my teaching experience at Stokes State Forest Music Camp, in which I was able to coach small chamber groups, band and orchestra sectionals, music theory, as well as one-on-one instruction. Immediately I'd like to know why the student is pursuing the given instrument, then sort of gauge a level of passion, drive, talent, etc. and then work from there. With guitar and piano there are several routes one could choose for performance, and each one has different teaching fundamentals. Someone who gravitates more toward Jazz will need a very strong base in musical theory, where as someone who wants to play classical might need stronger technical work. Read More

My pedagogy is based on the American jazz tradition and the teachings of Orff and Kodaly. I like to impart a holistic love of music in my students, without boring them with too much history or theory. However, it is my belief that theory and musical literacy will open doors to a greater level of fulfillment and understanding of music as a whole. I hold a PhD in Musicology (with a focus on the music of Japan) from Cornell University (2018), and regularly perform on both piano and trumpet here in NYC.
