If they want to learn a specific genre on an instrument that has never been used for that genre, I will be happy to teach them. I like to impart a holistic love of music in my students, without boring them with too much history or theory. Early on, I'll ask most students to play a recording of one of their favorite songs, which we'll use to improvise to as well as for ear-training purposes.
