My teaching experience began in high school, when I did my senior project on music education. Ever since then I have made teaching a regular part of my life. All of the amazing teachers in my life have helped me realize how important it is to pass down things that I have learned to the younger generations. In order to keep certain styles of music alive, they must be celebrated and taught to those who which to learn! Read More

My teaching approach focuses heavily on the fundamentals of the instrument and its relationship to Music... All students are different so I tend to approach slowly and access their reactions to my suggestions. It is so important not to make a student feel pressured to achieve, especially in Music... I want their interest and will to excel to be their own personal choice and quest. I think it is important for students to feel supported by their teacher as I will make myself as accessible as possible to answer any question or instill inspiring words to motivate their progress. I have taught both middle school and high school band where I have worked with students on a variety of instruments at many different levels. I've found that students always are capable of more than they believe. Encouraging regular practice and finding music that makes the students want to practice is most important. If a student isn't enjoying their lesson, I'm not doing my job! I am always finding ways to keep my students motivated to learn. Read More

My approach is repertoire-based, meaning that we learn technique through the demands of particular pieces; I also teach strength-training exercises to help students develop their fullest potential on trumpet. Deriving inspiration from both classical and jazz methods, I also believe in exploring the physical capabilities and limitations of the instrument so that the player can develop a personal relationship to it. Indeed, this relationship forms the crux of true musical expression, which is the overarching goal of my teaching. Read More

I have been teaching trumpet since 2008 where I have been giving private, in home instruction. All of my students take part in the NYSSMA festival and annually score at the top of their class. Some students have made it into the SCMEA, NYSCAME, and All-State Festivals. I am a trained classical trumpeter and I am proficient on the Bb, C, Eb, A piccolo, G Bugle, and Flugelhorn trumpets. As a freelance musician in the tri-state area I play in a variety of ensembles which include: swing bands, symphonic orchestras, musicals, operas, parade bands, and various community bands. Read More

Playing trumpet can be fun and enjoyable. It can also be one of the most physically demanding instruments to play. The physical aspect of playing can be the most crucial. Learning to play with proper air support, embouchure set, correct finger technique, and posture will not only make playing easier, but will also progress your abilities faster and more efficiently. My lessons are structured around the proper physical approach to the horn while applying fundamental techniques such as: Lip Flexibility, Technical Fingering, Range, Proper Equipment, and most importantly, Breath Control and Proper Abdominal Support. What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
My main love is classical music. It always will be. I enjoy playing jazz and blues as well but I will always favor classical music. This is why I insistent that my students learn to read music. You simply cannot accelerate the learning process without reading music. I have had adult students who think that it is too late for them to
learn to read music. That is simply incorrect. If anything it is more important for the adult to read because they can make better use of their practice time if they learn to read some simple figures.
If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I played clarinet since fourth grade. My brother played saxophone and since I thought that it was like the clarinet I started playing it as well. When I auditioned at college on clarinet I got in so I started playing other instruments as well. In college I got serious about playing piano. Piano is an instrument that I have a lot of experience with. I started to get serious about flute because the agents who booked weddings wanted reed players who could double on flute so they could play quietly during the cocktail hour. I learned trumpet as a band director and guitar because I taught in catholic schools for a while and they had a lot of students who wanted guitar lessons.
Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
My parents sang in school groups as students but they never really played any instruments. Because I was the oldest of four my two younger brothers and younger sister joined school bands following my lead. None of them pursued music after high school but their kids play band instruments and I try to help them out.
My one niece is in a middle school band in Georgia. And my nephew here in NJ just started playing clarinet. His little sister also plays flute and is in a music program
as well. They all came to music naturally and on their own. I never insist that anyone play an instrument unless they want to and then they should give it their all.
When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
I gravitated out of music once and that was enough for me to realize that I have to be involved with music on a full time basis. I tried sales for a few years but I really didn't like it. I am not knocking it because I had some success for awhile with it but I just couldn't make a career of it. I was a band director in public schools for over ten years that wasn't bad but I greatly prefer being a private instructor working on my own. The whole school thing took me away from my instruments for awhile but it gave me some great training in teaching and developing lessons.
