Hi! I'm Steven, a multi-instrumentalist teacher and performer located in New York City! I hold a Master's in Music Education from New York University and a Bachelor's in trumpet and tuba performance from NYU as well. I've spent my entire life dedicated to creating, collaborating, and performing music, all while keeping many students. I've been an active performer in rock, jazz, R&B, funk, soul, classical, new music, studio, and musical theater groups for more than a decade, learning from some of the finest players and teachers around. Sharing the joy of making music has been a passion of mine since my undergraduate days. I've been lucky enough to have had some of the most fulfilling students along my journey since then. I enjoy beginning students and their progression and growth and have seen some of my younger students granted music scholarships and even music degrees along the way. I've also had the pleasure of working with some of the finest adult beginners since living here in New York. Read More

I have been a professional teacher and musician for 30 years. As a young man I traveled all around the world on cruise ships playing shows. Then, I aggressively pursued a free-lance career as a jazz trumpeter in New York City. I have always taught private lessons and I enjoy the challenge of reaching the student to inspire them to improve. Hopefully it will be fun as well. I have a proven method for teaching beginning piano students and I have extensive experience teaching the trumpet as well. Read More

I'm hands-on, affirming, and challenging at the same time: I believe in gently recognizing areas of improvement, which we work on through fostering a positive, "no-wrong-answers" approach. I create a safe space for my students and encourage them to explore all areas and facets of the instrument; in doing so, students are then able to express themselves more dynamically in classical music, and to improvise more creatively in jazz. I draw my inspiration from my teachers past, as well as my favorite musicians-- trumpet and otherwise. Read More

The methods used in my trumpet studio focus solely on the fundamentals of playing trumpet. For all ages, there is a focus on building breath support, dexterity, and range. For the intermediate and advanced players, there is a focus on transpositions, sight-reading, dexterity, and learning standard trumpet repertoire. All of my lessons are tailored around the student and adhere to the New York State Standards for Music. Methods and other books I use include but are not limited to: Clarke, Gekker, Bai Lin, Schlossberg, Getchell, Concone, and the Amsden's 68 Duets. Read More

Like Most trumpet players, I follow and believe in using essential trumpet books (Arbans, Clarke, Flexus, Schlossberg, etc) and use others that depend on the desires of the musician. For children and/or beginners, I incorporate a little keyboard, to help with some theory basics, since all the notes are laid out. I have always struggled with my musical interests differing from my teachers while growing, so I develop my lessons based on each student, and play music that will both incorporate the teachings of the lesson, and also play music that is enjoyable for them, as well as etudes, or anything they would like to work on. I'm an experienced musician and educator with the strong belief that anyone can learn and love music. I studied music at the New England Conservatory and Harvard University, and I've had the privilege of traveling throughout North and Central America performing jazz, classical, rock, and many other types of music. I've also been lucky enough to appear on recordings by a variety of artists, including singer-songwriter Ben Zaidi, acclaimed indie rock band The World Is A Beautiful Place and I Am No Longer Afraid to Die, and bass phenom Esperanza Spalding. What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
My main love is classical music. It always will be. I enjoy playing jazz and blues as well but I will always favor classical music. This is why I insistent that my students learn to read music. You simply cannot accelerate the learning process without reading music. I have had adult students who think that it is too late for them to
learn to read music. That is simply incorrect. If anything it is more important for the adult to read because they can make better use of their practice time if they learn to read some simple figures.
If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I played clarinet since fourth grade. My brother played saxophone and since I thought that it was like the clarinet I started playing it as well. When I auditioned at college on clarinet I got in so I started playing other instruments as well. In college I got serious about playing piano. Piano is an instrument that I have a lot of experience with. I started to get serious about flute because the agents who booked weddings wanted reed players who could double on flute so they could play quietly during the cocktail hour. I learned trumpet as a band director and guitar because I taught in catholic schools for a while and they had a lot of students who wanted guitar lessons.
Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
My parents sang in school groups as students but they never really played any instruments. Because I was the oldest of four my two younger brothers and younger sister joined school bands following my lead. None of them pursued music after high school but their kids play band instruments and I try to help them out.
My one niece is in a middle school band in Georgia. And my nephew here in NJ just started playing clarinet. His little sister also plays flute and is in a music program
as well. They all came to music naturally and on their own. I never insist that anyone play an instrument unless they want to and then they should give it their all.
When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
I gravitated out of music once and that was enough for me to realize that I have to be involved with music on a full time basis. I tried sales for a few years but I really didn't like it. I am not knocking it because I had some success for awhile with it but I just couldn't make a career of it. I was a band director in public schools for over ten years that wasn't bad but I greatly prefer being a private instructor working on my own. The whole school thing took me away from my instruments for awhile but it gave me some great training in teaching and developing lessons.
