My teaching experience based on on my professional experience as a performer, It's not just about theory but also practical expertise. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and jazz music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the trumpet and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More

My primary teaching philosophy is one of showing by example. Book learning is excellent and necessary and I use an assortment of standard materials and literature to assign lessons. I am especially fond of the teaching method of Laurie Frink and John McNeil and their joint manual "Flexus" and the basic Carmine Caruso embouchure studies literature. I also create my own exercises for the the students based on their individual and immediate needs. Read More

For younger beginning students who are part of a music program at school, I typically have the students bring the books and/or handouts they're using at school to their lessons. Next, I observe the student's playing, in an attempt to determine where the gaps are in their development. This usually allows me to determine which books I will have the students purchase in order to supplement what they're doing in school in a way that will ensure complete and thorough development of basic fundamentals. I believe that my style is really flexible. I think that everybody has a different way to learn so my style will vary based on the student. I also believe that the role of the teacher should the one of facilitating the student process but ultimately is the student who should dictate the style and the pace of the lesson. I believe also that listening is a really important part of music learning so I have my student listening to a lot of different music and also I play with them all the time so that they can hear and feel what is it to play together. I currently teach at a Charter School in Newark, NJ. I have taught private saxophone and trumpet lessons since I was in high school. Practicing on a regular schedule is the best way for young students to improve, as well as older students to continue to perfect their technique. My goal is for students to have fun while they learn and while they practice. A lot of times, students are not encouraged to practice because it seems too difficult. Read More

What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
My main love is classical music. It always will be. I enjoy playing jazz and blues as well but I will always favor classical music. This is why I insistent that my students learn to read music. You simply cannot accelerate the learning process without reading music. I have had adult students who think that it is too late for them to
learn to read music. That is simply incorrect. If anything it is more important for the adult to read because they can make better use of their practice time if they learn to read some simple figures.
If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I played clarinet since fourth grade. My brother played saxophone and since I thought that it was like the clarinet I started playing it as well. When I auditioned at college on clarinet I got in so I started playing other instruments as well. In college I got serious about playing piano. Piano is an instrument that I have a lot of experience with. I started to get serious about flute because the agents who booked weddings wanted reed players who could double on flute so they could play quietly during the cocktail hour. I learned trumpet as a band director and guitar because I taught in catholic schools for a while and they had a lot of students who wanted guitar lessons.
Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
My parents sang in school groups as students but they never really played any instruments. Because I was the oldest of four my two younger brothers and younger sister joined school bands following my lead. None of them pursued music after high school but their kids play band instruments and I try to help them out.
My one niece is in a middle school band in Georgia. And my nephew here in NJ just started playing clarinet. His little sister also plays flute and is in a music program
as well. They all came to music naturally and on their own. I never insist that anyone play an instrument unless they want to and then they should give it their all.
When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
I gravitated out of music once and that was enough for me to realize that I have to be involved with music on a full time basis. I tried sales for a few years but I really didn't like it. I am not knocking it because I had some success for awhile with it but I just couldn't make a career of it. I was a band director in public schools for over ten years that wasn't bad but I greatly prefer being a private instructor working on my own. The whole school thing took me away from my instruments for awhile but it gave me some great training in teaching and developing lessons.
