I also give my younger students a practice log so they can track how much they practice. I like to treat it like a game. That way they look forward to practicing and can gain an appreciation for the trumpet. I also want the student to look forward to lessons with me. Not for my own personal sake, but I want the student to enjoy taking lessons. If they don’t enjoy lessons, they aren’t going to want to play. Read More

I meet each and every student at their own level, wherever that may be, and help them grow. I like to talk to each student or parent about their goals in music with the understanding that many are very different. I try to make my lessons as enjoyable as possible for all of my students. I generally require a student to purchase a book depending on what they are working on. Read More

I am graduate of the Berklee College of Music with a degree in Music Business/Management. I have over 31 years of private teaching experience, and I teach all brass instruments, with trumpet being my specialty. My lessons are tailored to each individual, session to session, and employ proven methods that will advance a student’s ability and skill level. I have performed with many national recording and touring artists including Deep Purple, Bobby Vinton, Connie Francis, “1964 The Tribute”, Sting, James Taylor, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Oleta Adams, and Natalie Cole. My experience in teaching starts from me being an instructor for the chamber ensemble back in college. I became an instructor when the director came to me and asked if I was interested in becoming a music instructor. I always encouraged my students to practice everyday. By practicing every day then student will notice that they are progressing. If a student isn't progressing then I'm not doing my job. I encourage my students to enter any competition or recitals. By demonstrating ways to count out rhythms, clap beats and how to write in the counts, students will have a better understanding of how to approach rhythm. Teaching musicality is another important element in lessons. Students should have knowledge of dynamics, phrase structures and musical styles. In order to teach this, I have my students play a wide variety of solos from all style periods. I also encourage them to listen to the piece and often give them recordings and mini listening assignments. Read More

Fun but tough. I can tell when a learner hasn't practiced, and it affects the lesson and growth. I always try to make sure that the learner ends the lesson feeling accomplished. Read More

My methods are different for every student, but I always start with fundamentals. This includes scales, exercises to improve sound and intonation, reading, writing, improvisation, and most importantly listening. Depending on the path the student choses, some areas will be focused on more than others. I will often introduce more advanced concepts early if the student displays interest in them. I am not the kind of instructor who will say "play your etudes first and then we can talk about improvisation." I almost quit shortly after I started music because I had an instructor with that outlook. Read More
