From 5 to 8 years old, the lesson takes place in a playful way. Easy hand exercises, simple rhythmic patterns, pieces with polyphonic elements. From 8 to 12 in the program there are scales and exercises by L. Ganon, J. Bach, W. Mozart, P. Tchaikovsky, and K. Cherny. For all students, I begin with assignments from 24 Italian Art Songs to teach fundamental vocal technique and develop a classical sound. Depending on the student's interest, they will also be assigned musical theater pieces or art songs in varying languages as well. As a student's ability level goes up, they will be assigned more difficult repertoire as appropriate. There is such a thing as too far so pushing them outside their limit is unhelpful in a private lesson. I want the student to feel excited and accomplished in what they are doing because everyone's musical journey is different, even if students are starting from the same skill level they will have different things they have to work on to become better musicians. I always want to make sure my students can apply what they learn in my lessons to their participation in their actual choirs. If a student is preparing for a PMEA Choir audition, I will help them prepare the repertoire as well as provide a mock audition. If they sing in a church choir, we will work on sight singing hymns as well as working on any difficult literature. If they simply want to learn more about music theory, I will focus on that. In 2014, I have completed my studies at Boston University, where I completed a PhD in Musicology with a focus on jazz of the 1930s and 1940s.
