Based on the strength and weakness of a students skill, a customized extracts from several different method/etude books such as Physical Approach by Gordon, Cornet Method by Beeler, Practical Studies by Getchell and etc. will be used. For example, if a student excels in range but needs an improvement in articulation, effective practice pieces for articulation will be extracted from various method/etude books for enhancement. And to that end, I believe a student needs to play trumpet every day- it doesn't have to be much, but because it's both physical and mental exercise, it's good to stay with it. This includes her book, "flexus", along with a number of exercises tailored to the student. Laurie always found a way to teach every student differently, based on their weaknesses and strengths. For trumpet students I initially provide my own material, based on the exercises which I have found to be beneficial in my own playing. Early on, I'll ask most students to play a recording of one of their favorite songs, which we'll use to improvise to as well as for ear-training purposes.
