My particular brand of brass pedagogy has roots that trace back to the Chicago Symphony's legendary Bud Herseth. I believe in the pursuit of mastery of many of the basic techniques of brass playing - air movement, flexibility, and tone are the most important pieces of what we do as brass players, and I have collected an arsenal of exercises to build skill in these areas. The methods that I would typically use are the Arbans complete Conservatory method for trumpet and Cornet. Schlossberg´s Daily Drills and Studies, Clarkes method and Caruso. I have been studying these four methods quite some time now and understand not only the instruction on the page but the purpose of the excercise itself. For high school students, I assign a program of etude study, orchestral excerpts and solo work appropriate to their skill level to prepare them for competitive honor ensembles and college auditions. I usually start my beginning piano students who are children, in Alfred's Basic Piano Library, Lesson Book 1A. After a few months, I begin adding solo repertoire that is appropriate for age and ability. For middle school age students and adults, I start with Alfred's Basic Piano, Adult, Level 1. I also like to find out the student's individual interest and find repertoire that they are interested in learning and that are aligned with their current skills. Read More

My primary teaching philosophy is one of showing by example. Book learning is excellent and necessary and I use an assortment of standard materials and literature to assign lessons. I am especially fond of the teaching method of Laurie Frink and John McNeil and their joint manual "Flexus" and the basic Carmine Caruso embouchure studies literature.
