In the first lesson, I assess the student's current ability and also discuss the student's personal goals and interests in music. Based on this information, I create a daily fundamentals routine for the student to use to improve the basic building blocks of playing a musical instrument. That way they look forward to practicing and can gain an appreciation for the trumpet. I also want the student to look forward to lessons with me. I do use some of the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements Series material cause it is consistent and user friendly. I believe in being being honest and encouraging, allowing students the chance to struggle and fail in a safe environment, while stressing and correcting proper techniques. I encourage practicing a little almost every day of the week, and finding what fires you up about the instrument.
