I start elementary students with learning about the piano, its history and show them the internal parts. We learn finger numbers and our first songs are using those finger numbers to encourage the correct hand position and strengthen our fingers. I build rapport with the student and introduce pieces I feel they would enjoy playing . I use djembe drums to help keep the beat steady and improve listening skills. For beginning students I typically start with Bastien piano books which have 4 different levels. Once they finish 4 levels, I will begin to introduce classical songs, Hymn, Jazz, Game music, Pop and also teach them free styles with chord progressions. Also, my students can learn any songs they want to play since I am able to remake songs based on their level. For adults, I focus on teaching the sight-reading skill with the right technic and theory and also my adult students can learn any genre of music with me. Read More

That causes both sides of the brain to learn together. I do not rely heavily on exercises or drills, but prefer to find pieces that will musically teach the needed techniques. That being said, I do occasionally use portions of training etudes by Czerny, Isidor Philipp, and others as needed. However, I have used other series such as Faber or Bastien with some other students, especially if they have had prior lessons and were taught on those methods. I always like to use lesson, performance, and theory books, to allow students to not only learn new concepts as they progress, but also learn pieces that can become performance-ready, and gain a wider understanding for the theory behind the musical concepts. My teaching methods focus on building on the fundamentals of embodied proficiency with music (not just how to "read what's on the page", but first how to feel and delve into what's happening with all the moving parts and their many relationalities).
