Some of the events we hosted were as follows: a Latin Dance Night where I taught salsa, Bachata, and Merengue dance to 30 students, an African American culture/history recital, and a world music expo including distinguished musicians teaching Taiko drumming, Balkin music, Global flutes, and West African drumming and dance. I also maintained a small lesson studio consisting throughout my time at the University of Iowa. Those lessons were driven heavily by the interests of my students. I do tend to assign, as mentioned elsewhere, listening homework. I do this because I've seen it help students learn what they want to and need to learn faster as well as help students learn to like, love, or at least appreciate new things. The main point here is that every student is complex, difficult, and hard insomuch as teaching method required, but my passion is so great that I don't see issues or problems but rather new opportunities to get students excited about learning and demonstrating what they've learned. It depends on the age of the student, but there are plenty of method books and pieces that can both teach a student music theory and notation, as well as their performance skill. With beginners its perfect to start with the Rubank series from Beginner-Intermediate. Many students are given the "Standard of Excellence" series by their school teacher and that series works as well. I believe these books are a great start, but can get old fast. Read More
