All of my students follow more or less a similar path that deviates a bit once they have developed some. No matter the age I start all students off with building fundamentals of tone, flexibility, articulation, and range. I use a combination of exercises from David Vining, UNC's own Buddy Baker, and Emory Remington. While building fundamental playing skills I will have students begin playing etudes. Younger students will start in their band method books, but as time goes on they will transition into Rochut's Melodious etudes, and the Rubank method books. Read More

I now teach music at the Boston Higashi School for students with Autism. I am still playing my trombone as well as teaching private lessons and I plan to give some recitals next year. I am also pursuing my other interests such as teaching ballroom dance. Besides from music alone, I enjoy getting to know people, learn new things, exploring deep philosophical/psychological questions regarding humanity, life, and existence, all forms of art especially dance, and finally, nature walks. :) Read More

In the summer of 2022, he served as an artist fellow in the Atlantic Music Festival, giving varied performances in orchestral, chamber and solo settings. To fuse his dedication to performance with his interest in academic research, Tommy also presented a full lecture recital in the recent conference on cultural assimilation in music hosted by the University of Calgary. Furthermore, an equally devoted performer on the euphonium, he has been invited to play with the New England Brass Band and has been performing with the Boston University Wind Ensemble on an assistantship since 2021. I do tend to assign, as mentioned elsewhere, listening homework. I do this because I've seen it help students learn what they want to and need to learn faster as well as help students learn to like, love, or at least appreciate new things. The main point here is that every student is complex, difficult, and hard insomuch as teaching method required, but my passion is so great that I don't see issues or problems but rather new opportunities to get students excited about learning and demonstrating what they've learned.
