I am a passionate and inspired music instructor in trombone, music theory, composition, arranging and beginner level piano technique. I graduated with my Master's Degree in Jazz Performance at Berklee's Global Jazz Institute I believe that music is a manifestation of the complexities of the human condition and can act as a conduit of change and inspiration. A native of Hong Kong based in Boston, Tommy Chiu has made appearances in major cities across Asia and North America both as a performer and an educator. His performance highlights include solo appearances with the University of British Columbia Chamber Orchestra and recently with the Boston Trombone Octet. As a trombonist, he was named finalist and performed as the only brass instrumentalist in the finals of various concerto competitions, including that of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestral Institute and the PRISMA Festival & Academy. In college, I discovered my interest in dancing, other forms of art, psychology, philosophy, and more. Also, I had equated greatness in music with having a principal position in a high level western classical orchestra. This is not to denigrate western classical music, however, I began to see a need and value for the study of music making from all cultures- world music or ethnomusicology. In 2002, I graduated from Triton Regional School District with a Diploma where I studied long and hard the fundamentals of music as far as performance and writing. Currently, I work as a piano accompanist and lesson instructor at a K-8 music school. This occupation allows me to work with a wide variety of students with different interests and ability levels. It has been extremely rewarding to help these students grow and appreciate music in deeper ways. Throughout high school and college I would also teach multiple students with different instruments.
