The reason a student desires lessons is because they at some point, began to develop a passion for music. Through lessons, I hope to help that passion blossom and teach that student how to best express themselves through music. My teaching style again goes back to finding out what and how the student wants to learn. A native of Hong Kong based in Boston, Tommy Chiu has made appearances in major cities across Asia and North America both as a performer and an educator. His performance highlights include solo appearances with the University of British Columbia Chamber Orchestra and recently with the Boston Trombone Octet. As a trombonist, he was named finalist and performed as the only brass instrumentalist in the finals of various concerto competitions, including that of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestral Institute and the PRISMA Festival & Academy. Also, I had equated greatness in music with having a principal position in a high level western classical orchestra. This is not to denigrate western classical music, however, I began to see a need and value for the study of music making from all cultures- world music or ethnomusicology.
