I believe that students need to be taught to teach themselves. As a teacher, my role is to guide the student toward realizations with appropriate materials and information. However, the most beneficial learning occurs when the students feels they were an active participant in the discovery(ah-ha! moments). I can give students the answers, but I tend to use more leading questions to get them to figure out the solution on their own. Read More

I strive to meet the needs of the students on a case by case experience, while providing a well rounded lesson that provides the student with the essential tools to succeed. Read More

For a young child to love music, a teacher must introduce it to him or her in a passionate way, without forcing it one the child. The struggling student is just as capable of loving music, just as much as the accomplished one. As I mentioned earlier, all students learn at different paces, so I teach each student as close as humanly possible to their level. It is not important for a child to play like a professional musician, but to play like the student has put his or her heart into learning the music. Read More

The most rewarding part of a private lesson is seeing the students' love more music develop right in front of you! Therefore, it is critical that I tailor each lesson to fit a student's needs so that they may progress at their own pace. I accomplish this by setting realistic goals for my students. Because of this I make sure to acknowledge the accomplishment of my students when they find progress, and use that progress as motivation for the next lesson. Read More

For beginning students, I like to start them on the Hal Leonard Essential Elements. I believe it moves at the proper pacing for young children. For intermediate students, Accent on Achievement works well because I find the music is more challenging. Also I require older students to know scales, primarily Bb, Eb, and F major being that they are the easiest to learn. It is from there that I gradually add a new scale (one every few weeks) until ultimately all 12 major scales are learned. Read More

Teaching is a joy. The music is a gift and it is a blessing to share it with others. I enjoy seeing students learn and pick up music right in front of my eyes. Teaching is a learning experience for myself as well. I enjoy working with others and use my skills/experience to inspire others. I push students hard but also give rewards and bring a feeling of fun into lessons since music is supposed to be enjoyable. Read More
Instruments: Trombone Recorder
For beginning students, I typically start with the Ed Sueta beginning trombone book (this is the book I learned from when I first started). Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. As a jazz musician, I can also instruct students on jazz improvisation, harmony, theory, composition, ear training, etc. No matter what the student is interested in, I will guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun.
