I want my students to have a very strong foundation in all musical elements while still being able to relate and experiences music in their own way. For beginning students, I would definitely start them in a beginning method book whether it be Essential Elements or Standard of Excellence. It is important for every student to have a basic grasp of all the musical elements- rhythm, melody, harmony, form, and expression. Read More

It is rewarding to see my students grow as individual musicians. I, along with each student, will set high yet realistic goals for their musical journey. Each student will take part in their progress through practice and/or research between lessons. I will tailor each lesson based on the students wants, likes, and need by first understanding the student as an individual. Read More

Much of this depends on where the student is in their learning progression--if they are just starting out, then I will focus on the fundamentals of good trombone playing, and work with the basic books like Arban's methods for Trombone. I also have used the Hal Leonard series. But as soon as possible, I will move the student into both listening and playing assignments, starting with artists whose transcriptions are more accessible for both range and technique: Curtis Fuller (including transcriptions I created in college, which are really amazing for students), Hal Leonard's JJ Johnson collection, my own recordings and transcriptions, and Etudes for Jazz from Mike Carubia Jack Gale. For beginning trombone students, I typically work with the Rubank Elementary Method (old, but it works well), the Emory Remington Warm-Up Studies, and various material that I compose to help a student overcome their weaknesses. Scales make up a major part of any student's learning, and once a student masters the basics of the trombone, I move on to appropriate solo repertoire based on the student's progress and interests.
