Overview:
Hi, I am passionate about the importance of music in my life as a creative outlet and trumpet playing in particular has given me a feeling of importance and confidence from junior high school on through my professional career. My band directors and private teachers have had a tremendous influence in my life and it's my intent to transfer that positive influence to those whom I teach. I am a mature adult living in Maitland, FL who enjoys the benefits of a healthy life style and positive outlook on life. I am also involved in several ministries at my local church.
EXPERIENCE
Hi, I am a university trained, professional trumpet player currently performing with the Maitland Symphony Orchestra and the Southwest Florida Symphony. I am also a former member of the first trumpet section of the Orlando Concert Band and have a graduate degree in Instrumental Conducting. I have experience teaching beginners starting with the 5th grade through intermediate and advanced high school and university age students. I can offer flexible lesson scheduling and can give helpful advice on purchasing and maintaining an instrument.
METHODS USED
My brass teaching method is based on correct breathing, posture and tone development. I believe a beautiful tone is the most important product we have to offer. Embouchure development comes with careful, purposeful practice in all ranges and at all dynamic levels. I also emphasize sight reading as an aid to becoming a well-rounded musician. Building personal confidence is one of the best ways to overcome performance anxiety. The method books I use are written by outstanding brass musicians such as Max Schlossberg, J. Arban, Herbert Clarke, Vassily Brandt, St. Jacome and Charlier. One of the most effective teaching methods I have encountered is for the teacher to play for the student while the student is developing his/her own abilities by listening and performing in a non-competitive setting.
LESSON STYLE
I have been a music teacher/performer for many years and know the rewards that result when success is student driven rather than teacher imposed. I use open ended questions to find out the goals and insecurities of students of any age. Positive reinforcement encourages students to gain confidence and use their natural creative abilities to overcome obstacles. I am conversational without being overbearing and tend to listen as much as I talk. My own trumpet playing experience in junior and senior high school taught me that music can be a joy to anyone - whether it becomes a hobby or a lifetime pursuit!
