For students who are learning an instrument for band or marching band, I like to integrate their sheet music or method books into the lesson. I use method books with students who are new to their instrument. These materials are then supplemented with scales, solo repertoire, exercises, and technique work as appropriate for each student's interest and skill level. From there, everything else falls into place. After completing my bachelors degree in 1998 at UC San Diego, where I studied with ground-breaking improvisers George Lewis and Bertram Turetzky I moved to New York City and began teaching privately, as well as performing with a variety of groups, including: the Hungry March Band, the Zagnut Cirkus Orkestar, Ansambl Mastika, Raya Brass Band and Sherita.
