For beginners, I put a strong emphasis on the fundamentals of music, such as getting to know the staff, time signatures, how to construct a major scale, etc. I will also introduce the student to intervals, which are the basic building blocks of western music. The student will also begin basic ear training, by learning to recognize certain intervals by ear, and also learning to sing and play on their instrument when given a reference pitch. Read More

If they want to make their school's concert band, or state's district or allstate band, we can work on the required rep. If they'd like to learn to improvise or get better at improvisation no matter what style of music (I believe a diverse musican is a complete musician), I have many ways to help students improve, focusing on performing licks in 12 keys, song study and transcription, "hearing before you play," and jamming with me! For beginning and intermediate students, I like to assign short pieces from method books such as Student Instrumental Course and Rubank. For more advanced students, I will help them explore their particular interests, introduce them to traditional repertoire, and for jazz/rock/pop students, aid them in the process of transcribing the music they love, which benefits their vocabulary as well as their ears. In developing a complete musician, I want to offer support for my students' other musical activities, as well as provide them with resources that they might not have elsewhere. Read More

Especially during COVID, having the additional technology to help them is a very good resource. In the past, my intermediate and advanced students have used the Rubank method books, being supplemented level appropriate repertoire. As someone who comes from Lynn, where funding for students is low, my teaching philosophy has always been that I believe that any student of any age or socioeconomic status should have the right to music education. For beginners, I have a multitude of etudes, simple songs, and exercises to encourage sight-reading, finger comfortability, and basic cognitive understanding of music fundamentals such as scales. For guitar, I usually begin with fun simple songs such as "What do we do with the Drunken Sailor" and a simple blues. For woodwind instruments, I'll typically begin with songs such as Hot Cross Buns, Mary Had a Little Lamb, or some holiday songs during the holiday season. Read More

The aforementioned points tend to help the student progress and gain a passion for whatever they're studying in music. I've also found that a curriculum that is full of listening homework from all over the world and all throughout history to go a long way in helping students learn things they might not have even known they liked or loved. My students are encouraged to enter the world free of fear, be it performing and or writing music. Read More

As an educator, I'm a dedicated pedagogue. I like to encourage students to think, work, study, and practice the instrument on their own, not only in the class. My leitmotif is "I can't teach you anything, I can only make you think”. As a teacher of clarinet at the music school "Vatroslav Lisinski", my career dates back to 2006. My students have so far won 49 first, 16 second and 2 third prizes in the national and the international competitions. Read More
