I began teaching part-time in 2018, when I took on my first student in my final year at University. Since then, I have made a point to take on students who are eager to learn and excited about music. I have found during my time that every student loves to learn relevant skills that build toward an end goal, and I encourage my students to branch out and try things outside of our lessons to great success! I've very goal oriented. I want to have a direction to steer the student towards. No point in teaching reggae parts to somebody who wants to play classical music. Most of it is a little bit of good sense, a little bit of exploring some different kinds of music and a little bit of practice. Read More

I am a fully-certified music educator of over 20 years: I have taught both middle school band & choir to at-risk youth for 3 years, as well as elementary music at a private Christian academy for an additional 3 years. With the saxophone as my principal instrument of 35 years now, I also play many other instruments that I teach, including: Piano, Violin, Drums, Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, and Trombone. As for my formal education, I received the Bachelor of Music Education degree from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey; and the Master of Music Education degree from The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA, 2010). I tailor my instruction to the needs and wants of the student because I am a strong believer that if the student is interested, they will stay excited about their instrument and be motivated to develop their skill. Goals are set for each student. It is a positive learning environment. I am a good motivator and the techniques used depend on the age of the student as different things motivate the various age levels. Read More

It is my philosphopy that all people have the capacity to learn -- although not everyone learns at the same rate or in the same way. I believe in student-centric teaching meaning I try to find out what the student's goals are and then modify my curriculum to their unique learning style. No two lessons are the same! Read More

My teaching style is goal oriented. In my personal life, I like to set measurable goals (long or short term) then find out what steps I need to take in order to achieve them. This approach goes for how I interact with my students. We will start usually with me asking you what would you like to be able to do in X amount of time? This is important because without measurable goals, growth is not always guaranteed. Read More

I teach always. I teach by example, and I teach formally. My formal teaching background begins in church when I was 19. I did my mom a favor and started teaching/leading the children's choir. It was fun, I enjoyed it thoroughly, and our 2 performances went GREAT! It gave me a taste for it so I became an actual teacher in the SMCISD school district as a Focus Teacher (Special Education).
