I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. I'm always looking to bring on new students of all ages! Read More

Although I have been involved in studying and performing music since an early age, I did not teach music much until I retired from my career as a university professor. Since then I have taught for about 10 years total, beginning guitar, ukulele, and piano (beginning through intermediate), first for a music store and later in my home. I have recently moved to Kyle, where I developed my teaching studio, but the Covid pandemic led to my stopping teaching for some time. Read More

The ultimate goal that I have for my students is to see that they have the same passion for music that I found when I was at my beginning. Nothing is more satisfying than seeing a student revel in their own personal relationship with music, but to share their love of music, this is paramount. Music is a learned skill, and nothing in life worth doing comes automatic. Pacing and acknowledgements of good work tend to encourage students to continue their hard work. Read More

I teach always. I teach by example, and I teach formally. My formal teaching background begins in church when I was 19. I did my mom a favor and started teaching/leading the children's choir. It was fun, I enjoyed it thoroughly, and our 2 performances went GREAT! It gave me a taste for it so I became an actual teacher in the SMCISD school district as a Focus Teacher (Special Education). My methods include a number of fundamentals that include scales, technique and learning how to get around the instrument with ease and versatility. For beginners, I like to focus on the George Vance techniques and teaching in order to build a strong foundation. At the intermediate level, I like to find out what the students find interesting and cater the lesson plans around that. Same applies for adult students, I like to see where their interest are and focus on those aspects during the lessons while ensuring that their fundamental chops are at the level they need to be. I began teaching private lessons in 2006 while working for Walt Disney World Entertainment in Orlando, Florida. I have maintained a studio of at least two students everywhere I have moved, and most recently taught music for a Montessori program and comnnnity college in the Virgin Islands. I build healthy, classically trained voices that are capable of stylizing to fit any genre; and being a composer myself, I teach piano from a musically interpretive viewpoint. Read More

For beginning students, I usually start with a reputable method book that will allow them to advance in "grades" as the skills get better. At earlier stages of learning, the focus is on the technique towards learning the instrument. As a student progresses into intermediate and advanced stages, several pieces from the solo repertoire (and if available ensemble pieces) become part of the curriculum. Throughout the advancement in levels, I try to focus on selecting pieces that the indivdual student will have interest in while balancing pieces necessary for learning more difficult musical techniques.
