Aquiles Navarro is a New York-based trumpeter, composer and DJ of Panamanian heritage. He derives his sounds from folkloric music, salsa, and reggae. This eclectic music background, based on his upbringing in Panama has led him to collaborate with folkloric musicians, dancers, visual artists, actors, and poets. He studied in Panama with tenor player Carlos Garnett and trumpeter Victor “Vitin” Paz. After moving to the US, he received a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Performance at the New England Conservatory, and a Master’s degree from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami where he studied with trumpeter Brian Lynch. I am comfortable teaching all ages, and have had students in the past ranging from ages 6 to 50. Teaching is a great joy for me; some of my proudest moments have been at student recitals, watching young musicians play! When teaching younger students, I prioritize developing a passion for music through engaging repertoire and positive encouragement, while instilling proper technique and organized practice with weekly progressive assignments. I also establish practice expectations and share progress with parents. In every lesson I demonstrate concepts by performing various woodwinds and piano, and by singing. Advanced students work towards external goals established in consultation with both students and parents like school concerts, honor band/orchestra auditions, or college applications, encouraging students to grow their musical community outside of the lesson studio. I'm a professional jazz saxophonist and composer who has lived in New York and performed around the world for 15 years. I began playing sax when I was 9 years old and quickly developed an interest in jazz. I started playing my first gigs at around 14 and decided to devote my life to the saxophone and music. I received a Bachelor of Music from NYU in jazz saxophone performance. Some of the highlights of my performing career have included concerts in Italy, Russia and Brazil, as well as performances at Lincoln Center and the Village Vanguard in New York. Read More

Mike C, both with vocals and instrumental performance fuses together a combination of classical training, old school jazz, and funk, altogether bringing a creative, and soulful interpretation to music.  Mike's heart and soul penetrates each note he plays in a fashion that is characteristic of performers double his age. At the same time he has brought the advancements of electronic music technology into his performance and composition expanding his sonic palette beyond "one horn, one sound." Mike's recording credits include the independant films "A Cup of Coffee" and "The Masterpiece." For beginners who are children I will start with the fundamentals of the instrument (flute or sax) and then from there will introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their level. With adults I like to find out what styles of music they are interested in and instruct them with that in mind to keep the lessons fun and enjoyable while still educational.
