It's important that the students set goals for their playing as well, this helps with the self-motivation to practice. It could be something as simple as next week I want to play the single note that has been giving me trouble, or as advanced as I want to be able to play this solo piece from memory in three months. Progression in private lessons is all about the motivation of the student, so I try to give them as much motivation as possible. Read More

Students will instill a passion for music, or further this passion! It is important to note that students will progress at their own pace. There is no deadline for when students reach a goal. It is important to see how a student reached their individual goals as opposed to how long it took to reach them. Quality is greater than quantity. I will aid students in setting realistic goals, which will inspire students to progress in their learning. Read More

My teaching experience began in 2016, when I enrolled in a degree program in secondary education at Southern Connecticut State University. At Southern, I learned very much about human development, and teaching methods and strategies. I also gained over 120 hours of classroom observation experience. Upon graduating with a B.A. degree in Physics (Southern doesn't offer music education degrees), I was hired as a Paraprofessional in a New Haven Public School. Read More

My teaching style is fairly laid-back, allowing each student to progress at their own pace. This allows me the freedom to tailor the instruction to the specific needs of the student and successfully find what creates their individual passion. I also believe that - especially in creative mediums like music and art - every negative critique I point out needs to be accompanied by at least two positive critiques. This positive reinforcement will help push students to progress rather than pushing them down, and all I want is to see the people I teach grow as both budding musicians and people. Read More

Performing and writing music are still my favorite parts of life and I enjoy sharing these experiences with all types of musicians. I recently graduated from the University of Connecticut with my Bachelor's Degree in Psychology. Although I did not choose to major in music I was still able to perform in dozens of concerts during my time at college. My psychology training has transformed the way I think about music and I believe psychology has made me a very effective teacher as well! Read More

I have been teaching for more than 30 years, mostly in the public schools as well as privately. I have instructed large groups and ensembles, as well as smaller musical groups in and out of the public schools. Performing in various Jazz groups throughout the state has enhanced my teaching knowledge in the field of music education. My Masters degree in music education has enabled me to develop as a well rounded instrumental music teacher, and also as a flexible individual when it comes to understanding my students' musical needs. I firmly believe in starting with the basics of singing for younger students, however they should have fun as well as learn. Giving them a choice in at least one song we do every so often, to me, is the way to keep them interested in the art. As the students get older, I attempt to have them sing in multiple genres and languages, as to broaden their experience and see what they like. Read More
