Instruments: Violin Viola Saxophone
Having the fortune to study with many amazing teachers and being a fourth generation educator, I took a stab at teaching while in high school when I helped younger violin and saxophone players make their first steps in what I was already doing as a full-time music student. Ever since, I have aimed to teach by the values that I inherited and adopted as my own, and I am eager to continue on by utilizing a range of tools that help musicians grow and improve. Read More

This is why I try to not ignore the deeper, more holistic aspects of the art, which is why I emphasize composition in my lessons. I will compose for my students pieces that highlight something they are working on, but I will also assign compositions for my students because kids love it and creativity yields a deeper connection to any given subject than, say, rote memorization. I love kids and do not stifle their creativity, without steering too far away from the task at hand, I like to listen to what they have to say because you never know what valuable information you may learn about their present perspective. From 2002 to present I have taught private lessons and ensembles here at Filedheacht Music School [East Bridgewater, MA] which I own and operate. I have taught throughout my career as time and schedule have permitted since 1983. I am also working through the Assembly Theater in northern Rhode Island as one of their two pool music directors. I have worked at ccri as a student tutor and assistant teacher. During that time, I taught a couple of students in voice and ran a choir. The choir has performed many times in multiple venues such as the RI state house. I have sung and performed in many different genres, so I am equipped for whatever you or your student needs to learn! Read More

Fundamentals come from slow practice, and unfortunately, there is no true fun way of doing it. However, I pair technical work with listening assignments, so that the students actually see the point of fundamental training. Hanon is the one book that has stayed with me for two decades and I adhere to its various training regimens very closely. The book itself may be insufficient, but the auxiliary exercises I designed will improve the practice efficiency. Read More

For younger students, I typically assist and follow the method books students are working on. For example, they may use Standards of Excellence or Hal Leonard’s Essential Elements. These lesson books are crucial to teaching the fundamentals as a student is beginning to learn an instrument. I will break away from the books and introduce appropriate solo repertoire. I will also be mindful to the interests of the students to keep them engaged. Read More

Watchign a student improve right before your eyes is incredibly rewarding, as I have learned from my many years of teaching sailing. I think it is crucial to keep the student engaged so that this improvement remains attainable and consistent. This is accomplished by setting many small goals and by tailoring the lessons to the student's interest. If they enjoy classical rep, we will work on that, but if their favorite band is the Dave Matthews Band, we can also work on playing music in that style and many others like it as well. Read More
