I have been teaching lessons since my undergraduate days and have taught private lessons on and off since then. I've spent time in the elementary music classroom as well as the middle and high school music classrooms. I have teaching experience in the areas of voice, choir, percussion, show choir, guitar, piano, music history, and musical theatre history. I've also spent time directing and choreographing various musicals and choral concerts. Read More

My teaching philosophy is that anyone can learn. Any dreams or goals a student may have, it is my job to make them happen! For beginners, I teach using the Suzuki method. I find that they can be very helpful and that many kids enjoy the songs within them. For intermediate and advanced students, I use a combination of the Suzuki books, chamber music, and outside works. I find learning how to work with other musicians and how two parts might fit together is as essential as learning theory and technique itself. Read More

I like to balance musical enjoyment and technical training in my teaching method. I like to see the students making new musical and technical discoveries each week. I encourage them to set goals such as performing in quarterly student recitals and to consider taking part in a Syllabus program that has advancing yearly goals. I use the Suzuki method especially with the younger students and encourage parents to become effective home teachers through coaching and printed materials. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I like to start with Piano Adventures by Nancy and Randall Faber. In addition to the method books to introduce music theory I incorporate musical games and flash cards. Keeping lessons fun and stimulating for young students I believe is vital to their growth. For older and more experienced students, I like to personalize my lessons to what the student is interested in while keeping lessons challenging and enjoyable at the same time. Read More

For kids I find that having a large quantity of music to learn at each level gives more variety and sense of achievement, so I usually recommend beginning students have multiple books to aid in learning. For example a young piano student will study from lesson, theory, performance, and technique books each week. This yields a well-rounded student who is proud of their achievements and eager to move forward. For adults I recommend a lesson/theory combination book at least to help with reading music. Read More

My students describe me as patient, fun, understanding, and challenging. :) For the shy ones, I like to get to know them, and see what I can do to get through to them and get them to open up to music. For the adventurous one, I dare them to go on adventures with me. For the self-critical ones, I become their voice of encouragement and love. For the over-confident ones, I open their eyes to more challenges that will demand more of themselves. Read More

This is especially important for younger students, as parental support and involvement are crucial for maintaining regular and focused practice sessions. Siblings are also welcome to be present during the lesson time, provided they are accompanied by a parent and do not cause any disruptions. Consistent attendance is vital for a student's progress and success. Please ensure that your student attends every lesson. Materials The necessary books and repertoire for the classes will be communicated by the teacher during the first class. Read More
