Overview:
I'm a kind and passionate teacher with a love of sharing my knowledge and seeing my students succeed. I attended both Clackamas Community College and Portland State University, both of which have highly respected music programs, but ultimately I left before finishing my degree to go on a national tour with my band Intervision. Honestly though, most of my development has come outside of the educational system, and through my own work and practice. My experience is extensive. I've led worship music for thousands, overseen massive music programs at both Lutheran and Catholic churches, plus sold out venues like the Aladdin Theater, and shared the stage with platinum artists like AWOLNation, Lifehouse, and The Neville Brothers. Currently I'm focusing more on teaching, developing my curriculum, while also performing and composing.
EXPERIENCE
I remember teaching my first lesson about 15 years ago. I was very nervous! However it was smooth sailing after that.  I grew up attending Harmony Road Music School, and they recently offered me a job, but I passed on it to focus more on my own lesson practice. I've worked for Beacock Music, Margie's Music School, and subbed at others, as well as had many of my students for 10+ years. I recently was Director Of Music at a large Catholic church in the Irvington neighborhood of NE Portland. Because of the time commitment I was forced to pare down my student base. Now that I'm stepping down from that position I'm hoping to build the base back up.
METHODS USED
I can teach any skill level. If you are beginning with zero experience, the first thing I teach is middle C. It's the center of the universe as far as the piano is concerned. I also teach 'spider position', which is how the student wants to have their hands positioned. Intermediate students can dictate to me what they want to work on. If they just want to learn "Charlie Brown" I can teach that, or if they want a more regimented lesson plan I can do that as well.  I also have advanced students. I've had players come to me wanting help learning a standard, or help with their time while playing solo. Counting and time is something I excel at and is one of my specialties. The art of the metronome can be a difficult thing to grasp, but it is ultra important and will ultimately lead to long term success.
LESSON STYLE
Having fun is paramount! I have a great personality, and teach in a loosely structured environment so the student feels comfortable. No matter the age or skill level, the student will find that their enthusiasm and effort will dictate their progress. I will kindly share knowledge and help give them the tools needed to succeed. Each student is different, and has different needs, and I have always been able to instinctively give what is needed for each individual lesson. I'm a firm believer in not being a taskmasker. I will provide the tools for the student to get better, and it's up to them if they utilize them.
