I am a passionate, experienced, kind, and motivated teaching artist who enjoys helping my students discover and develop their abilities. As a full-time working artist, I have a vibrant national career as a composer, singer, conductor, and producer in early and new classical music. I have given masterclasses at Harvard University, ASU, Wellesley, Kenyon, and many other K-12 schools across the country. For all beginning students, I start with the Suzuki books. They introduce new techniques in a comprehensible way that helps build upon fundamentals before progressing to more advanced techniques. After a bit with Suzuki, I like to add the Dotzauer etude book, which helps to focus on one technique per etude, building on what we learned earlier in Suzuki. I have taught in one-on-one lessons, large group rehearsals, and everywhere in between. I started my teaching with a group of peers and professors while studying my undergraduate Music Education degree. We worked as a group to teach children ages six through 16 how to play violin/cello and perform as group. The clarinet lessons are personalized because each student has different strengths and weaknesses. The important thing is to strengthen the foundations and enhance the qualities of every student. As a teacher, he has successfully mentored numerous students over the years, many of whom have gone on to complete university degrees in clarinet and composition. I give Suzuki violin, viola and cello lessons. I also use classical method with scales, etudes and solo pieces in my teaching as another option. With fiddle students I use Ann Wheeler method books. My piano students use Faber piano series. My Guitar students use Hal Leonard guitar method and guitar song collections. Ukulele students start with Alfred's ukulele method and more advanced students use Greg Horne and Shana Aisenberg Books 1-3. Read More

I find that fully immersing the student in their chosen style encourages them to practice and makes learning more fun and easy. Not pushing the student too hard is very important, all students learn at their own speed. Working with the students, such as doing improvisation and performing with them can help boost confidence in their abilities and can show students new ways of thinking about their instrument. Being sure the student has realistic goals is also important, this allows them to progress at their own level. Read More

Kathleen has served as concertmaster and soloist for the Chehalem Symphony Orchestra, and has performed with the Miami Symphony Orchestra, Fort Smith Symphony, Ars Flores Symphony Orchestra, Richmond Symphony Orchestra, Reno Philharmonic Orchestra, and Reno Chamber Orchestra. She has over twenty years of teaching experience, including Indiana University, Davis & Elkins College, and George Fox University.
