For all beginning students, I start with the Suzuki books. They introduce new techniques in a comprehensible way that helps build upon fundamentals before progressing to more advanced techniques. After a bit with Suzuki, I like to add the Dotzauer etude book, which helps to focus on one technique per etude, building on what we learned earlier in Suzuki. Practice, of course, is important to learning any skill. But if a love of the instrument is there, practicing shouldn't be too much of a chore. I try to never give my students too much material at once, so as to frustrate them to the point of not wanting to play anymore. Each student is their own personality and I enjoy seeing how the music making unfolds with them in the process of learning. For beginning students I usually use the Faber method. I usually work through to level 2a then I begin exposing the student to repertoire. Each lesson is spent listening to the work they have done and music theory, of course. My teaching dates back to my high school years. I started as the only freshmen in the high school string orchestra and even made it as the assistant principal. As a sophomore, I was the youngest principal the orchestra had seen. At that point, I was teaching not only the younger, elementary school students but also the middle school and even other high school students privately. Starting into my junior year, I became a conductor for the elementary and middle school orchestras thus expanding my private studio as well. Read More
