Instruments: Piano Violin Viola

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Piano Adventures by Nancy Faber. I introduce rhythm reading, music composition, and basic music theory in the first year. I focus on effective practice techniques. My students learn the skills of practice routine that build measurable and gratifying progress from week to week. For advanced students and adults, we explore what the students are interested in. I design my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging in fun no matter the ability level. Read More

I generally split lessons into three sections, 1/3 with chords, 1/3 scales, 1/3 with songs, but every student is different, for example, If your goal is to strictly learn chords to sing folks songs over, I will emphasize more chord reading and learning time. If you want to play leads, I will spend more time emphasizing scales to help you learn how to improvise. There are also other excercises we can do like rhythm reading (just with clapping, no instrument) transcription/listening, and harmonic analysis. Read More

For those students who are children and are just starting out, I'll have them work through a lesson book that I find fit for them so they can grasp the fundamentals. Once they establish the fundamentals, I'll assign them solo repertoire so they can begin learning their own pieces. For older students, I'll find out what they are interested in learning and go from there. Some examples of a main focus for piano lessons may be to learn a specific genre of music, learn how to compose original music, or improve their technique in an existing realm of music. Read More

I am an instructor who recognizes music as a powerful symbol of humanity and the dramatic emotional effects it has on people. I thoroughly enjoy sharing these experiences with my students, helping them to grow and become more acquainted with all that music has to offer. I graduated from Concordia University with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education in May of 2013. I have been fortunate enough to play the guitar and piano in numerous musical outfits for the past ten years, having been featured on such festivals as the Warped Tour Festival, Music Fest North West, andThe Fest in Gainesville Florida. I strive to be a balanced teacher that engages the students musical interests while also setting a high (but patient) bar for technical facility and discipline. As someone who has received classical and jazz training, I love to be able to provide students those dual/complimentary curriculum tracks, and, for those students that are eager to dig in to the theory side of things, connect the dots between. Throughout lessons and following up on previous weeks, I always make a point of acknowledging the progress that has been made before honing in on problem areas or the aspects with room for improvement. I began my music career in Germany when I was 8. Since then a day has rarely gone by where, if I had a piano, I did not practice it. I had the wonderful opportunity to study with amazing teachers I've the years. I studied with Katalin Staplefeldt in Westport, CT FOR 8 years and then, after moving to London, studied with Dr. Gregory Peppetone for 1 year. Following the departure from London of Dr. Read More

In most of my lessons, I use one of several piano methods, which I supplement with additional materials, chosen according to the student's musical preferences and goals. My preferred courses for beginning students are Alfred, Faber and Bastien. I always include music theory, as it is fundamental to appreciating and understanding the music, and it allows students to learn the basics of improvisation. For students interested also in vocal training, I have experience and an excellent teaching method available. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
I have ADHD, so practicing can be a little challenging to me. To stay focused, I have to sing the melody of what I'm playing in my head. Leave your phone in another room. That can be a huge distraction. I try to get anything that can take my mind away from practicing out of the way beforehand. (Homework, work, etc)

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
I would say whenever they express an interest in music. Even if it's them hitting a few keys on the piano nonsensically. It's never to soon to start building a relationship with music. More seriously, I would say once they start understanding and following directions.

When will I start to see results?
This really depends on how much the student practices and their desire to improve. Improvement can be seen after the first lesson if the student understands the instruction and follows through. Nothing major will happen overnight though!

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
My sister played piano and I wanted to be just like her. I chose violin because an orchestra came to my elementary school and I immediately fell in love. The next year, I picked up flute because I didn't think my new school had an orchestra. I thought it would be the closest to violin. It turns out they did and I continued to play both. I somehow managed to keep up with piano throughout all of this.

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I wrote and performed a piano piece that was absolutely awful. It was probably my biggest failure as a musician. I decided to not let this failure define me, rewrote it and turned it in to a piece for full symphony.

What does a normal practice session look like for you?
I spend about 20 minutes warming up on scale exercises. Then I move to parts of repertoire that trouble me. When I feel like I have accomplished that, I practice going into and getting out of the section for smooth transitions. I try to practice for three hours.

If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I have a Bachelors in contemporary music composition and am currently pursing my masters in composition. I chose this because while I love performing, I love creating even more. I have been writing music since I was six years old.

If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
I would probably be an elementary school teacher!

What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
Classical. I like how intricate it is and how much you can do with it.

If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I love learning. I heard someone playing violin and fell in love with the sound and decided I had to take it on. The same happened with the flute. I then went on to learn how to play clarinet, sax, cello, viola, and mallet percussion I wanted to get as comfortable as I could with as many instruments to better myself as a composer. While I can't play those last ones proficiently, it helped me understand music more.

Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
Everyone in my family draws and paints, so I'm kind of the odd one out. I tell everyone that I paint sound!

When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
I think once I got to college and people started labeling me as a professional. It was really weird, but I started to like the new title, so I rolled with it.
