I was a private student of Katalin Staplefeldt of Westport CT from 1972-79 Student of Dr Gregory Peppetone '79-'80 Guildhall School of Music and Drama under Leslie Murchie '80-'82 while concurrently studying Piano Performance with Gwynneth Pryor at Morley College in London. Student of Robert Preston, concert performer based in New York, NY. '82-'83.
Overview:
I began my music career in Germany when I was 8. Since then a day has rarely gone by where, if I had a piano, I did not practice it. I had the wonderful opportunity to study with amazing teachers I've the years. I studied with Katalin Staplefeldt in Westport, CT FOR 8 years and then, after moving to London, studied with Dr. Gregory Peppetone for 1 year. Following the departure from London of Dr. Peppetone, I auditioned for, and was accepted by, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where I studied under Leslie Murchie for 2 1/2 years. During that time also I studied Piano Performance at Moreley College under Gwyenneth Pryor. After returning to America, I resumed my studies with Katalin Staplefeldt and then onto study with Robert Preston, a concert pianist based in New York City.
EXPERIENCE
My experience teaching begins in 1997 after returning to America having spent 13 years in Africa. I began with just 4 students but after short time (and a lot of word-of-mouth recommendations) my studio grew to over 25 students. I love the piano and I would like my students to find that same love. I try to make my lessons as fun as I can and I like to share my sense of humour with my students. I encourage my students to perform at least twice a year, one time in a Festival that is held so they can be adjudicated by a guest teacher. I love teaching all ages! The oldest student I now teach is close to 90 years old but we really have fun together!
METHODS USED
For beginning students I usually use the Faber method. I usually work through to level 2a then I begin exposing the student to repertoire. Each lesson is spent listening to the work they have done and music theory, of course. Each week the student will be assigned a task to complete. For adults, it very much depends on what the student already knows, what they want to learn and how much experience they have. I also want the adults to perform if they would like in small piano salons held at my home every 2-3 months.
LESSON STYLE
I love to see my students accomplish their goals. Therefore I always assign a piece easily within their reach. However, I believe it is important to have higher goals. In keeping with that, once the student is at an appropriate level, I assign a piece that will take a bit more work to master. I find that this motivates most of my students to really shine and to see the rewards of consistent and effective practice.
I believe that playing piano can be a life-long endeavor. Therefore I try to instill a love of music in general in my younger students and foster that love if the student is older. My goal is to form players that are interesting to listen to and have something to say in their playing.
