I began teaching piano to local children in the neighborhood as a teen-ager and have always found the experience to be interesting, rewarding challenging and enjoyable. I have experience teaching students of all ages (5 to 80), with a wide range of abilities and interests. I have prepared students who are interested to participate in recitals, festivals and to take exams such as those from the Toronto Conservatory of Music. For novice students, I will most likely start with a method book such as one from the Essential Element's series. However, I will typically move students through the method book quickly and get right into performance repertoire that is appropriate for their age and level. Composing your own pieces and learning to improvise are extremely important in my method of teaching so I will also start teaching students how to write their own music as soon as possible. I guided these students to feel the construction of the keyboard, and understand basic piano knowledge such as scales, theories. They were not piano majors, but still I wanted them to be able to think like pianists, which would be extremely beneficial for their future musical career. I use the score to pose questions about the way musical material is organized, how it reflects the composer’s ideas, and what makes the score coherent to the player and the  listener. In this way, a score is one point of focus for developing interest and a questioning attitude—practices that will serve students for a lifetime. I believe that our ability to talk about music emerges from the experience of “thinking music” as performers and that we truly learn music by using its grammar.
