I try to cater my lessons to the interest of my students. If a pupil’s passion for music can be harnessed, then developing musical skills can be a simple process. I have a wide variety of material I teach from, including Ted Reed’s syncopation, George Lawrence Stone’s Stick Control for the Snare Drummer and basic piano literature. I also use music selected by the student to create custom lessons. Read More

For beginning students, I start with the traditional Mel Bay (or comparable) beginner books that focus on the fundamentals while building strength and coordination and just build from there. For students with a little more experience, I like to focus on more challenging exercises and concepts while nurturing their knowledge of music theory and performance. Each student is different and knowing what motivates them motivates me. My goal is to have them want to pick up their instrument and play. Read More

I am a Detroit-native international multi-genre musician, vocalist, producer, composer, arranger, orchestrator, writer (librettist, lyricist), and show programmer. I also am a proud graduate of Grand Valley State University (GVSU) having obtained a B.S. in Art Politics with a focus on Curriculum Ethos. I serve as music director for a number of artists including the well-known RB mavens Atlantic Starr, Marena Oates-Clunie, and others. Prolific musicianship has afforded me performance and collaborative efforts with artists such as Prince-protg Sue Ann Carwell, Twinkie Clark, Fred Hammond and Valerie Simpson just to name a few. I generally use Alfred for piano, both the children's and adult's versions. I use Hal Leonard for guitar. For both violin and double bass, I generally use either Belwin or Essential Elements. However, some students prefer to not use a method book at all and that is fine. Also, some have different method books they like, which is also fine. Read More

My success stems mostly from the fact that I make learning very enjoyable. I am here for the students and to assist them in studying the principals of music and their favorite artists. As a music instructor I set individual goals and tailor all lessons to the needs and pace of all students. I know how important it is as a teacher to pick up on when my students are having trouble or feeling overwhelmed. Read More

My teaching style is fun and effective. I find that a huge percentage of issues people face are themselves, so I employ fun techniques to overcome obstacles. An example would be a student I currently have who gets tense as she approaches higher notes- I will have her toss a ball back and forth as a distraction technique and it's amazing that a beautiful, free high note come right out! My lessons will be pretty focused on music theory so that, in time, the student will be able to make their own music with ease. For new beginners, I'd likely ask which song they wanted to learn. And then I'd teach it to them, while also explaining scales, how to build chords, and the theory used in the song. Because my favorite part of playing music is improvisation, that's my go-to goal for the student, but I'm always willing to adjust my teaching methods accordingly. Read More
