For piano students just starting out, I like Alfred’s basic piano library, and the Bastien piano basics. There are several other piano courses I’m excited to try as well. For both piano and voice students, I like to include a book of tunes with which the student is familiar: movie tunes, Disney songs, etc. For older students, I will focus a little more on the different time periods of music and help them to gain an appreciation for each. I am someone who is passionate about music and loves working with students and seeing that passion grow in them as well. I have been playing the piano for 26 years and have learned many different styles, from classical to jazz to improv playing in different bands across the U.S. I graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with a Piano Performance minor. Having the opportunity to travel around the nation to perform has been an incredible experience as a musician. Read More

For piano students, I like to use the Alfred method books with supplemented music that peeks their interest. I like these books because they have several series depending on the age of the student and their interests such as music theory and broadway hits.-For woodwind students, I like to work for a few weeks out of their band books so I can assess their strengths and weaknesses. From there I will assign the appropriate method book; typically from the Rubank series. Read More

In my studio, the most important thing when structuring lessons is to make them individualized. No two lessons look the same in my studio. If a student wants to work on composing, that will be the focus. If the student wants to work on sight-reading, we'll focus on that. Of course, it's important to be a well-rounded musician, but these lessons are for the students' benefit, not mine, so I'll make sure they leave their lessons with what they want to gain. Read More

Hi, my name is Marianne! I graduated from Garden City Community College in 2011 with an Associate of Arts degree in Piano. From there I transferred to Southwestern Adventist University where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Sciences and minored in Vocal Music. I love to share my passion for music with others, and I hope to convey that to my students as well. My goal is to ignite that passion in my students so that not only they will want to share with others, but that they will find joy in it. Read More

I work to deconstruct this notion and help to build confidence in their ability to learn and develop. Positive affirmation is how I work. I believe focusing on the strengths of a student while working to develop past what may be perceived as weaknesses is paramount to cultivating a life long relationship with music. Although I am a stickler for practicing, I do this because we are setting goals for each lesson and the only way to reach these goals is through consistent practice. Read More

The method book I begin younger students on is Piano Adventures by Faber and Faber. There are 5 Level books to complete. We use the lesson book, as well as the technique book. I also supplement with solo repertoire and various materials. For the older beginner, I use Alfred's Basic Adult All-In-One Course, as well as supplemental solo repertoire. Music theory is essential in my studio, and I use various learning tools to teach theory. iPad apps, worksheets, games and manipulatives are a few examples. Read More
