My teaching experience dates back to my early 20s and my college days. i started teaching private lessons part time, for some family and friends etc, and have been teaching and meeting new people and students ever since. the number one factor in learning your craft is to dedicate yourself to regular and consistent practice or rehearsal into your schedule and stick to it if you want to be successful. and i will always encourage my students to maintain a healthy balance of rehearsal into your daily life. i can't emphasize this enough; especially the younger students, to build a routine, as it tends to really help the student progress and gain a passion for the their craft. i encourage my students to enter competitions and recitals, when the time is right of course.. as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. i am my own students resource and im always willing to help out anyone i can and im always looking to bring on new students of all ages! The learning never stops. That is the beauty. It excites me every day that I wake up to know that I am going to learn something new today and add to my musical ability. No matter whether its a crazy jazz chord or a new scale or an idea for a new song, I have a foundation that all musical concepts connect to. I want to make others as excited as I am about music. Hello, I'm Mackenzie B.. I'm currently a student at the University of Kansas for a Bachelors in Music Education. I am student teaching currently, which is my last step before receiving my degree. I currently work with Kerry Marsh for the KU Jazz Singers and enjoy singing both classical and jazz music. I also have two or three ukuleles and enjoy jamming with an acoustic guitar. With KU Chamber Choir I was able to go to Greece over the summer and be a part of an international experience. Read More

In my studio, the most important thing when structuring lessons is to make them individualized. No two lessons look the same in my studio. If a student wants to work on composing, that will be the focus. If the student wants to work on sight-reading, we'll focus on that. Of course, it's important to be a well-rounded musician, but these lessons are for the students' benefit, not mine, so I'll make sure they leave their lessons with what they want to gain. Read More

I am a patient and mild-mannered teacher. I take great pride in fostering in students a lifelong enjoyment for music. Self-confidence and self-motivation are my priority for students and I strive to nurture that every single lesson. I continuously praise accomplishments and recognize when students overcome challenges. Students mirror their teachers and when I am patient and kind to students, they are patient and kind to themselves. Learning an instrument is hard work and takes patience and dedication; harshness and hostility only work against a students ability to push themselves and grow. Read More

Playing rhythm guitar and lead guitar, improvising solos, using a capo, playing in different keys, how to play with more than one guitar player in a band, finding your space in an ensemble and many more practical things you will encounter as a guitar player I will also teach along the way. Ask questions. For electric guitar players, I will teach you how to use your amp and the concept of how to use your pedals, different types of electric guitar playing styles, how the electric guitar fits in with different types of ensembles, who is the coolest person in the room, and many other electric guitar specific topics will be discussed as we learn from the same material our acoustic brothers and sisters are studying. I employ the use of scales and harmonizing techniques if so desired, but mainly focus on what the student would like to be able to accomplish in his or her time with me. I like to let them pursue their own directions while overseeing that they learn the fundamental aspects of their chosen genre or genres. Learning and especially music should maintain FUN as a central priority, because without excitement over the topic and enthusiasm in development, it becomes easy to get bored and walk away from the activities.
