I have just relocated (04/18) to the Hickory, NC area and I'm looking for some new students to get started in the area. I have over 40 years in the music business performing, teaching, recording, composing. I can teach most types and styles of music and I specialize in improvisation. I love to see people learn, progress, and have as much fun playing music as I do. I came from the Colorado Springs, CO area. Read More

Engaging the students in active participation is crucial in all learning modalities as is discovering what motivates him or her to excel. Teaching is not a static endeavor, and requires fluidity and flexibility on the part of the teacher. I take pride in my ability to analyze and monitor the learning situation and regularly modify as need be. Children are natural music makers and it is so important to keep that joy of learning, alive and well! Read More

For beginner students who are adults, I tend to begin with Alfreds Basic Adult All in One Course. It is a wonderful book that teaches beginning theory and piano concepts at the perfect pace for adult students. As we progress through the book together, I begin to give pieces such as Clementis Sonatina in C (first movement). We start at a slower tempo and work each hand individually until the student is comfortable to try both hands. Read More

It actually brings me joy to see my student have the moment where they start to understand what and why they are playing scales and reading music. I encourage my students to not get frustrated. there is a method, and it does not take long to recognize the methods, and how they fall together. I would like to help my student grow, as well as trust themselves. I have learned that it is my responsibility to teach, and the student's responsibility to practice. Read More

With beginning children in clarinet, we will start with the book they are currently using in band (typically essential elements or tradition of excellence). Once the basics have been grasped, we move on to method books with the choice of Rose or Rubank (depending on the student's skill level). Scales and arpeggios are also practiced every day and seen as a prerequisite to every practice session. Once the upper level books have been completed, orchestral excerpts and Cavallini's caprices will be introduced. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to accomplishing that wants and needs their wants and needs. Read More

I love teaching students music. I have grown up around music my whole life. I grew up in Alabama and started taking piano lessons when I was 5 years old. I had amazing teachers and learned so much from them.  I am actively involved in not only my students music abilities but my own as well, I never stop learning!  Read More
