I first find out a little bit about my students musical likes and taste, or, with younger students, find somethingfun that interests them, just to find some common ground. I also find out a students long term goals. For instance, if a student seeks to be a opera singer as opposed to a worship leader, the training needs to be more pointed towards classical pieces and Arias instead of learning church music and how to engage a crowd. I have a somewhat fast paced, exciting music teaching style but am cognizent and respectful of the need for each student to progress at his or her individual pace. I like to engage the student fully in the process of learning, and as there are several different learning modalities, I feel it important to establish which style the student most identifies with. In this manner, each student will have the opportunity to attain the best musical outcomes and allow for optimal enjoyment of playing the instrument. Read More

For beginning students, I start with the Essential Elements book. If the student has already taken lessons or is in their school band/orchestra, I encourage moving onto the Rubank Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced method books depending on ability. Once a student has proven that they are able to handle it, I will start on solo repertoire. Particularly for college-bound musicians who wish to major in music, the majority of their lessons will be based on preparing solo literature for All District or college auditions. Read More

I start off by addressing breath and phonation, even with the mostadvanced singers, because singing, like anything in life, is alwaysabout the fundamental basics. I give students exercises that will helpthe student find their true and most efficient voice. I help buildmuscles that will aid in this as well. It is all about whatever worksfor the student too, because if one thing works for one student, itmay not work for another. Read More

In the past I have carefully guided students through the selection of materials that would insure steady, gradual progress. Learning a musical instrument should be a fun and enjoyable experience with a sense of personal satisfaction and fulfillment. I place great emphasis on areas such as theory, harmony, transposition, ear training, sight-reading, improvisation and areas of interest to the student such as musical styles. Whether you aspire to one day play professionally, attend a music school or just play for your own enjoyment, we can set goals together to reach the level you desire. Read More

I like to set attainable, yet challenging goals for each student. Ensuring that each student progresses at his or her own pace will encourage the development of a love for music. I try to acknoweldge a student's progress in order to inspire a desire to keep learning. Each lesson includes some technical exercises, a theory component, and other components pertinent to the specific instrument. For example, piano and organ students will learn scales and arpeggios, voice students will learn various breathing techniques. Read More
