The first thing I do when teaching a student is to learn what musical goals and aspirations the student may have. Then, depending on age and experience, I build a custom program for the student, which may include using various books, resources, and even materials which I have created. I like to start with review of the last lesson and any homework assigned for the student to work on. My belief is that anyone can play the piano, as long as they have the right motivation and are willing to devote time to daily practice sessions. Young students (ages 4-6) are highly encouraged because I believe this is the best time to start and I have extensive experience with this age group because of my weekly interaction with preschoolers through my classes.
