I will first find out what genre or style the student is interested in, and then gear further instruction towards that while still incorporating the basic fundamentals of music theory and some classical music. For beginner children, I will use the Alfred Basic Piano Library Course books starting at level 1A, which include lesson, theory, technic, and notespeller. Books I use for teaching Piano is the Piano Adventures series of books by Nancy and Randall Faber, which is a great lesson book and a good basic piano method for beginners through intermediate level students. For guitar I use the Hal Leonard Incredible Chord Finder and the Warren Nunes Jazz guitar Rhythm and Background Chords and the Solo Patterns book. Any time I teach, I make sure to plan every lesson so that the student(s) can progress as far as possible every time they are learning with me. With school-age students, I use the Orff Schulwerk approach often, incorporating their own ideas into the lesson and having them learn through various senses (imagery, movement, games, etc.).
