Ibegan teaching private lessons from 2004 and tried to consistently teaching students in my home studio. I was a counselor and private lesson instructor at the OSU Flute Workshop from 2011 to 2013. Playing duets with student, learn very exciting extended techniques, and various repertoire are features I emphasize for students to help them enjoy and motivate to learn. My preferred methodology uses the Alfred series books, as well as the Faber Piano Adventure series as supplemental material. I use a combination of note names and intervals to teach reading skills. I also like to incorporate theory into every lesson. Once we have the basics down, I like the student to tell me what he/she would enjoy playing, and I'll do my best to incorporate that, or something similar to that.  Also, I prefer that the student have access to a real piano rather than a keyboard. When beginning teaching I typically assess the learners general attention span, natural strengths, and what is motivating for them. I complete a beginner piano assessment to find out how the learner is with pattern recognition, any previous knowledge they may have, and what type of instruction they respond best to. When I understand the learners least restrictive environment I will choose the type of notation we start with. This can be traditional sheet music, pop chords, or adapted notation that may consist of numbers, letters, and/or colors. Read More
