For my piano students, I like to use a mixture of books from the Alfred, Bastien, and John W. Schaum collections. I eventually assign more advanced solo repertoire as the student progresses. For my vocal students, I pick music based on their interests and vocal qualities. I have taught my students musical theater, opera, art song, gospel, pop, and many other styles throughout the years. I found that I really enjoy getting to know someone one-on-one, and I think I'm particularly effective at figuring out how to communicate knowledge, create art and inspire on that level! I set realistic goals for my students at each lesson. I like to demonstrate how to play- usually I count while the student plays, which helps with the beats. We may sing together or separate the note names or the song words. Every music phase requires different input. Students who struggle with note reading, get additional note reading and writing books.
