I received her Bachelor of Science degree in political science and flute, graduating from the Ball State University honors college at age 20. I earned my masters degree and Ph.D in flute from New York University where I was the youngest woman to receive a Ph.D from the School of Arts and Sciences. A university professor for 12 years, I have been a faculty member of the University of New Haven where I taught flute, piano and economics in addition to teaching flute, music history and music theory at Southern Connecticut State University and South Central Community College. With children, I like to start with method books such as Essential Elements or the John Thompson series for piano. For more advanced pupils, I will start with what they are currently working on, find areas for improvement, and then adjust the curriculum accordingly. Motivation can be the biggest issue for the students. There is always a boredom element when practicing the same thing over and over again; so i like to add some spontaneity and life to practice sessions. I'll slide in an improvised solo while the student is strumming chords or teach the student little melodies within the scale. and I'll end the sessions playing through an entire song or exercise with the volume cranked up!
