First, I find out what the student wants to focus on more, whether it is notation and musical theory, or learning a few basic chords, strumming patterns and such, to be able to play their favorite songs. No matter their ability, this method of teaching is effective because I find that it keeps the students interested and engaged. Early on in my career as an instructor, I found the best overall approach to teaching was to encourage consistent practice, coupled with a strong emphasis on good technique and developing good habits.
