In the Suzuki program, the parent provides the proper home environment so that the child will succeed. Traditional Methodology is most effective with children aged 8-18. Children in this age range are ready to read notation, so this skill is taught from the beginning. The pupil is taught to identify the notes on the staff and keyboard, to recognize rhythmic structures, basic theory concepts such as key signatures, scales, chords, and forms, and the meanings of musical terms and signs. For beginning students, I start with the basics which includes proper posture and hand placement, identifying notes and keys on the keyboard and the theory behind identifying major and minor scales as well as triads. We will also begin with the basics to reading sheet music and move into chord charts once an understanding of triads has been established. The emphasis for these lessons is on pouring your soul into some practical excercises that are applicable to the stage, whether it’s a jazz ensemble, concert band, funk band, wedding group, solo project. What the student puts in, they will receive in return. The exercises will focus largely on tone production (your personality or voice on the horn) and transcription of ideas (to develop real musical vocabulary).
