As the musical director for my college A Cappella group, there was an element of vocal teaching for new and existing members. We learned new song arrangements as a group, rather than assigning parts and having singers learn at home. Conversely, they taught me! It was a great collaboration. I like my students to bring a small notebook, so that they may write their homework down, and any practice assignments.  I expect my students to keep a practice log of how much time they practice per week, in between lessons.  I always insist that setting goals and expectations for them, is very important, as well as keeping track of whether they themselves are staying on task.  I try and incorporate different ways of practicing or playing music, so that even practicing turns into being fun and exciting and doesn't feel like a chore.  Read More

For young students I use Faber and Alfred books. As well as Famous and Fun books which have popular tunes to help keep the students motivated to practice. My older students work in the standard Hanon exercise book which helps develop agility and evenness in the hands and fingers. I also teach my students all 12 Major and minor scales, arpeggios, and chord progressions. My more advanced students usually learn classical music and Jazz/Blues Rags series by Martha Mier.
