For beginner kids, I typically use the Liela Fletcher Lesson Book series. I find that my students usually progress faster with this series. For teens and adult beginners, I use the James Bastien "Older Beginner Series or John Thompson series to get them started. Always start where the student is, and take them from there. Always encourage and inspire students to be better than yesterday. Progress, no matter the amount, is progress. Take your own pace. In order to communicate musical ideas most effectively, I feel it is equally as essential to develop the students ear as well as their reading abilities.Each student will receive a personally customized work packet that includes sheet music, worksheets, and possibly audio/video samples. The packet implements training techniques exercises that will develop the students reading skills and ear-training, along with basic theory.The work packets also include sheet music to songs chosen by the students, in order allow them to apply their techniques in ways that are self-fulfilling.
