I'm a fun, energetic teacher who enjoys helping students find their inner passion for music. In 2012, I graduated from UNC - Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Mathematics. While studying composition under Dr. Allen Anderson, I premiered and recorded pieces for brass trio, wind quintet, percussion ensemble, and soprano with piano accompaniment. I am a focused instructor and pursue progress. I come from a background of a love for music that turned into a desire to learn and perform. I owe everything I have become to my instructors, and I try to implement some of their technique into my teaching every chance I get. I have just recently graduated from a three-year master's program in voice performance. Since I've started that program, I have had the opportunity to travel Europe with a vocal ensemble, perform three times at the Grove Park Inn, act as diction coach for a professional opera chorus, and perform Mozart's Requiem. I believe that music students are not "one size fits all", so I create an individual approach catered to each student's strengths, weaknesses, and interests. For beginners, I typically start with the very basics such as putting the instrument together(if applicable), posture/form, and fingerings. I was born in Ukraine in 1977. At the age of 18 I was introduced to one of the"jazz guitar greats" who taught me theory and improvisation. Those lessons lit a fire inside me that has only grown stronger with time.I founded the band, Shykina, in 1997 and toured Europe for the next 6 years, releasing 3 albums. Teaching in a traditional style, the method books primarily used are Alfred's Prep Course, and Faber. For the very young (4-5 years old), I have had great success using Music for Little Mozarts. I encourage independent sight reading with additional books of holiday songs and fun songs. Each level includes theory and/or note speller books. For the very young, I include note spelling games. I also allow students to perform their own compositions and help them notate on staff paper to understand rhythm and theory as applied in their own creations. Read More
