Music is my heart felt passion, and I thoroughly enjoy the oppotunities of sharing my musical knowledge and experiences with my students. I am a degreed music teacher, who travels to teach in Raleigh and surrounding areas including Knightdale, Wendel, Garner and Clayton. I first began teaching guitar and piano during my music studies at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS. At the university and after receiving my degree in music education, I have taught and performed in various musical settings and venues which has included the genres of classical, jazz, blues, rock, folk and country. Instruments: Piano
My teaching method begins with fundamentals. First, I teach about the piano itself. Second, I teach the notes. Third, I teach tones and steps. Fourth, I teach about major and minor scales. After I lay that foundation for the student I continue with theory and note identification. The student is ready to take off from there. I usually at this point let them select a song to play as well as I assign music. Read More

In college have had the opportunity to work as a music instructor to a studio with over 20 students on a weekly basis. The students ranged in age from 5 to 70. This gave me a good perspective on how to directly connect with each student to ensure that we are exploring the best concept of learning for the individual. Drum set lessons are always more groove oriented first and I do encourage becoming comfortable learning from an aural perspective before tackling reading music and understanding theory. Read More

There is something completely satisfying about seeing a student's face light up when they understand or master a concept. Unfortunately, I've dealt with insufficient instructors in the past, and nothing is worse than feeling like it's your fault when you mess up as a student. Therefore, I have a set plan for each lesson and leave my student with a new list of skills to master for the next lesson, because I want them to know what success feels like. Read More

For beginners I intent to teach the main guidelines of the instrument such as its properties, history and basic techniques to play properly. Then, I proceed to show them the fundamentals of the instrument such as scales and rhythm exercises to start. I always try to Introduce new lessons with a little bit of music theory tips to help them understand what they are doing, I reinforce this strategy by teaching them written music. Read More

Teaching in a traditional style, the method books primarily used are Alfred's Prep Course, and Faber. For the very young (4-5 years old), I have had great success using Music for Little Mozarts. I encourage independent sight reading with additional books of holiday songs and fun songs. Each level includes theory and/or note speller books. For the very young, I include note spelling games. I also allow students to perform their own compositions and help them notate on staff paper to understand rhythm and theory as applied in their own creations. Read More
Instruments: Voice Trumpet Saxophone Flute Clarinet
I take a very detailed and analytical approach to music performance, and this is reflected in my teaching. I believe many students look at a piece of music that seems too difficult and become too overwhelmed to realize that's it's not as difficult as it may first appear. By breaking down music into its components, pitch, rhythm, dynamic, articulation, etc., and tackling each item one at a time, students who thought of music as a strange and foreign language begin to see it as something that just works and makes sense.
